Bio of Clement Leung

Prior to taking up his present Foundation Chair in Computer Science at the Victoria University of Technology, Australia, in 1993, Clement Leung has held the Established Chair in Computer Science at the University of London tenable at Birkbeck College from 1986-93. From 1979 to 1986, he has held lecturing positions in Computer Science at the University of Reading, and University College, London University. He received the B.Sc. degree with first class honours in Mathematics from McGill University in Canada, the M.Sc. degree in Statistics and Operational Research from the University of Oxford, and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from University College, London University. Before joining the university sector, he has held various technical positions in industry, where he worked on database management, information systems, computer networks, and systems performance evaluation. His principal research interests lie in the Database area with particular attention focused on multimedia and visual information systems, content-based image indexing and retrieval, and high performance parallel database systems.

He has published two books and over seventy research articles. His contributions to the international research community include serving as Program Chair, Program Co-Chair, Panel Expert, Program Committee and Steering Committee members of major International Conferences and Workshops in US, Europe, Asia and Australia, as well as contributing to the Editorship of a number of International Journals. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, and a Chartered Engineer.
