Bitmap indexing is a highly useful feature in data warehousing. We describe bitmap indexing in Oracle and its role in query processing. Oracle's bitmap indexes are fully integrated into the RDBMS Server and fully updateable, and we discuss some of the technical issues that arise in such an implementation. We also discuss Oracle's parallel bitmap star join feature.
