__________________________________________________________________________ GlOSS: A Scalable Text-Database Discovery Tool __________________________________________________________________________ WHAT IS GlOSS? GlOSS is a system being developed at Stanford University that helps you find data sources that are relevant to your queries. To query GlOSS, just give it keywords describing the information you want. GlOSS will display a ranked list of the sources likely to contain the documents you're looking for. The GlOSS server is accessible through a World-Wide Web interface, at URL http://gloss.stanford.edu. __________________________________________________________________________ WHAT IS A GlOSS COLLECTOR? A GlOSS collector harvests information on data sources, and transmits it to the GlOSS server. The GlOSS server in turn uses this information to choose the most promising information sources for a given query. The current version of the GlOSS collector works on data sources that have been previously indexed by WAIS. The WAIS versions supported are the following: * freeWAIS-sf-1.0 * freeWAIS-0.3 * freeWAIS-0.2 * WAIS-8-b4.1 Once the collector has gathered information on a data source, it sends this information to the GlOSS server either through email or through a TCP connection. __________________________________________________________________________ HOW CAN YOU RUN THE GlOSS COLLECTOR ON YOUR DATA? If you want to have GlOSS index your data source, you need to get a copy of the collector code, install it on your computer, and run it. This is a very simple process. Please refer to http://gloss.stanford.edu/collector.html to learn how to do this. __________________________________________________________________________ For more information on GlOSS, please check: http://gloss.stanford.edu Please address any questions or comments to: gloss@db.stanford.edu. __________________________________________________________________________
