The Thing
(1982)
Synopsis
Horror-meister John Carpenter (Halloween, Escape From New York) combines Kurt Russell's outstanding performance with incredible visuals to build this chilling version of the classic The Thing. In winter 1982, a 12-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discovers an alien who's been buried in the snow for more than 100,000 years. Soon unfrozen, the form-changing alien wreaks havoc, creates terror and becomes one of them.

About the DVD: The Thing Collector's Edition takes it place as one of the finest DVDs
on the market. Universal has included everything of possible interest
here: a fascinating commentary by Kurt Russell and the film's director
John Carpenter; an extensive (80 minutes!) documentary on the film's
making that includes stop-motion photography not used in the film; the
theatrical trailer; outtakes; a photo album, storyboards and "Thing"
concept art and a production archive (extensive notes of the film's
production history).
Ultimately, The Thing is given the same outstanding collector's edition
treatment that Universal has given Psycho and Vertigo. Universal is getting
better with each collector's edition. The documentaries are more
extensive and the collections more fascinating. And, The Thing benefits
from the higher picture quality inherit with DVD. This new transfer
looks exceptional. The sound has been re-recorded into Dolby Digital 5.1-which
adds tremendously to the film's overall nightmarish effect.
This DVD is an exceptional opportunity to see the film in the best
format possible for home viewing - and for fans of the film (and who
couldn't be after seeing it?) a day's worth of extras to view and
study. Few DVDs deserve the 10-star rating - but The Thing has earned
every star.
Cast: Kurt Russell, Richard Dysart, Richard Masur, Wilford Brimley

Netflix Review
John Carpenter's The Thing showcases the director's finest work -- horror or otherwise. Based on the classic '50s film of the same title, an Antartic expedition encounters an alien long buried in the centuries-old ice. The Thing has the ability to take other forms, and it invades the expedition ... Complete Review

Twelve men, alone in an observation station in the Antarctic, with only there work and each other to while away the days. Sounds like a dream vacation for "The Village People"? Wrong. John Carpenter's remake of "The Thing" is quite simply the greatest horror movie ever made, period. And devilishly enough, it manages at the same time to be one of the greatest who-done-its ever made. That's all the more astounding when you consider that the original movie from the 1950s was such ... Complete Review

Loaded with many different features, this DVD will not disappoint. The Thing, one of the most underrated films ever made, comes brilliantly to life with crisp, clear textures and awesome sound. When this movie first appeared at the boxoffice, critics panned it almost universallly, for relying too much on special effects and not being true to the original and for not being particularly "scary". I went and saw it, and saw it again and was blown away by this movie. The critics I had read ... Complete Review

"The Thing" is one of the best films of the 80s in my humble opinion...The atmosphere and effects, and acting is killer, straight up no-nonsense...The tension is awesome...Saw this on cable but DVD really makes it happen...Cool commentary from Carpenter and Russell, a very-detailed documentary, ... This movie is FANTASTIC! I have for so long, been disappointed with movies that have added intense amounts of gore in order to 'scare' the viewer. This movie combines its share of gore with just fantastic 'scare tactics'. This movie has a soundtrack combined with tons of dark, shadowy, ... Complete Review
