Synopsis

Please note that this disc contains the movie. If you'd like to see the bonus disc, please rent Gladiator: Bonus Disc.

Upon the sudden death of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, his trusted and successful general Maximus is unlawfully imprisoned and condemned to the gladiator games by Marcus's twisted son Commodus. As the new emperor, Commodus fears Maximus could use his heroic stature to depose him and become leader himself. But Maximus gains fame as a gladiator and uses his celebrity to cause further damage to Commodus' tenuous hold on the susceptible Roman people, hoping to inspire them to rediscover their lost values and overcome the corruption that is eating away at them. These actions prompt Commodus to square off mano a mano with Maximus in the Colisseum with the fate of Rome at stake. The characters of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus appeared in Anthony Mann's epic "Fall of the Roman Empire:, played by Alec Guinness and Christopher Plummer, respectively.

Without a doubt, Gladiator is one of the better films of the season. That's the upside, and it's considerable. But Gladiator could have been one of the best films of the year. In a performance that confirms his arrival as a major star, Russell Crowe drives director Ridley Scott's thrilling, ...

Gladiator is a spectacular epic, unapologetically driven by blood and testosterone. Larger than life characters utter heroic lines and peform manly acts. The amazing part is that the film pulls all this off without irony or camp. It's an action flick that doesn't evoke that "guilty pleasure" ... Complete Review

It often takes years of hindsight to realize a movie is a classic. Scarface was universally panned when De Palma released it . The fall of the once mighty Roger Ebert didnt begin here( it began when he said Armageddon was the worse film of the year), but you knew he had completely lost credibility ... Complete Review

Now THIS is the ultimate summer movie. There is a story! And there is great action! There is a villain to loathe. And, I haven’t loved a movie hero this much since Braveheart stormed onto the screen in the summer of ’95. Russell Crowe is powerful and perfect as General Maximus Decimus ... Complete Review

Good Movie. Not gorry enough to be rated R as far as I can see. Not explicite or dirty, just pretty much what things were like back then.

If the acting and special effects are better in this film than the 100 like it made in the 50's and earily 60's that is all that it has going for it. This is the same script that was done to death in years past. It has cartoon characters rather than real people, the same noble general (or ... Complete Review
