Synopsis

Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney) is a garrulous, silver-tongued petty criminal having some difficulty adjusting to the regimentation of life as a man sentenced to a term of hard labor in Mississippi.

Reluctant to spend any more time crushing rocks, he scams his way off the chain gang with a clumsy duo of fellow convicts: sweet and simple Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) and the maladjusted Pete (John Turturro). The trio embarks on the adventure of a lifetime as they set out to pursue their freedom and the promise of sharing in the division of a fortune in buried treasure. However, they must also match wits with the cunning and mysterious Cooley (Daniel von Bargen), who tracks the men, determined to bring them back to the prison farm.

With the words of a blind prophet ringing in their ears, "You will find a fortune but not the fortune you seek," the three shackled escapees make a hasty run for their lives. They travel down the road on a journey filled with perils, surprises, and wondrous events. Along the way, they meet an assortment of curious characters including Tommy Johnson (Chris Thomas King), a musician on his way to Jackson to sing on the radio; Big Dan Teague (John Goodman), an unscrupulous, one-eyed Bible salesman who deceives them; Babyface Nelson (Michael Badalucco), the notorious gangster, who befriends them in the middle of a robbing spree; Penny Wharvey (Holly Hunter), an important part of Everett's not-so-distant past; and Governor Pappy O'Daniel (Charles Durning), who is engaged in a reelection campaign.

All the while the trio is trying to stay ahead of the law. Despite all the obstacles, near misses, and narrow escapes along the way, they reach Ithaca, where Delmar and Pete hope to be rewarded for their perseverance and Everett hopes to be reunited with more than his gold.

An exciting and entertaining blend of high adventure, humor, and heartfelt emotion, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" is written and directed by Joel & Ethan Coen, two of today's preeminent filmmakers, who put their own unique modern-day spin on Homer's classic tale, "The Odyssey."

Jean is a "stage mother" whose fondest wish is to see his plump daughter, Marva, attain fame as a singer (notoriety that eluded him in his youth). Problem is, Marva's tone-deaf. Ripping a page from Robert De Niro's playbook (as Rupert Pupkin in The King of Comedy), Jean kidnaps Belgium's answer to Britney Spears and holds her hostage until his own voice is heard by the music industry.

Love 'em or hate 'em, you've got to hand it to Joel and Ethan Coen: They never make the same movie twice. Even when they reissued their breakthrough film Blood Simple this past summer, they tinkered with it and shortened the running time.

No, you never quite know what to expect from the Coen ... Complete Review

You must like two things to enjoy this movie. 1) The Coen Brothers themselves, for to know them is to understand the quirkiness, inventiveness, and genius of this story. And 2) You must love Bluegrass music, for the movie is a virtual monument to the genre. The film is great if you know Homer's ... Complete Review

A great comic treat from the Coen brother's. Made me want to read The Odyssey again because I enjoyed this film so much. Had a very suttle humor that you don't see in many comedies today, because most comedies force humor. George Clooney should receive an AA nomination (he should have received one ... Complete Review

Terrific music, great cinematography, interesting and funny characters and an intricate story set in 1930's Mississippi (based on Homer's The Odyssey). Wonderful character acting and excellent chemistry amongst the three leads. Seen it twice and will see it again. Both my wife and I loved it.

I am glad that I did not see this in the theatre, but I am happy that I rented it. The movie is different, and a nice change of pace. The only part that didn't seem real is George Clooney in Mississippi. All of the other characters are a delight. I recommend it highly if you haven't seen it.

This movie was not typical of a Gerorge Cloony movie. The story moved very slowly and lacked substance. Three guys wandering the country side with an occasional run in with trouble made for a boring movie. I sat through it but couldn't wait for the end.
