Proof of Life
(2000)
Synopsis
In this romantic drama, Peter Bowman (David Morse), an American engineer in a Latin American country, is captured by anti-government forces. When the rebels learn his identity they demand $6 million for his safe return. However, his U.S. employer is on the verge of insolvency and will not provide the ransom.
Peter's wife Alice (Meg Ryan) is forced to deal with the matter on her own. She retains the services of freelance professional hostage negotiator Terry Thorne (Russell Crowe). With the help of a fellow negotiator, Dino (David Caruso), and a trio of highly trained mercenaries, Terry mounts a bold operation to rescue Peter that could as easily result in disaster as in triumph.

Netflix Review
Mixing action, suspense, forbidden romance and foreign intrigue, Proof of Life tries to follow in Casablanca's well-trodden footsteps. The end result, however, feels like a bizarre hybrid of a James Bond movie and a two-Kleenex Harlequin Romance love story.

This is a very good adventure-kidnapping yarn based on true events. Beautifully filmed in South America, and stylized in the swift action genre, I found it moved fast and generated a slow build of excitement. Russell Crowe is excellent, and the rest of the cast is fine too, especially Robert ... Complete Review

I wanted to hate this movie, I really did. There was so much hype about the main actors and their "relationship" that I wanted to hate it. But I couldn't. Don't watch this movie because you are a Crowe or Ryan film. Watch this movie to see the amazing performance of David Morse. He is a ... Complete Review

Enjoyed everything about this. Excellent casting. Just enough character development that doesn't detract from the action.

The photography was a real highlight on this film. Equador's natural wonders were beautifully featured. Meg Ryan looked lovely in her palacial and colorful abode. And Russell Crowe was appropriately grizzled, though his character was a bit flat. The performance was not up to his scene-chewing ... Complete Review

Very good movie and an interesting topic. I enjoyed the director's decision to release this form of the movie and felt that it made a much more powerful statement about Russell Crowe's character.
