Von Ryan's Express
(1965)
Synopsis
As the Allies begin to push the Nazis back toward Germany, U.S. combat pilot Col. Joseph Ryan (Frank Sinatra) is shot down and placed in a prison camp. Initially, he's more concerned with surviving than escaping, earning him the insulting nickname, "Von Ryan." But in time, Ryan takes over from the commanding British officer (Trevor Howard) and masterminds a daredevil race for freedom that involves commandeering a train and getting it across Italy to Switzerland with the Nazis in hot pursuit. Then it's all blazing action, hair-raising chases and spectacular Italian scenery in this Oscar®-nominated adventure that runs full speed until the nail-biting finale!

Frank Sinatra comes across OK as the American leading a bunch of British POW's, but Trevor Howard is better in his role. Good train action, some suspense, and plenty of great shots in the Alps.

Despite the absurd premise--short swaggering American with broad North Jersey accent inspires class-ridden British soldiers to help themselves against wicked Germans -- this is a fun movie. One of my favorite WWII movies. Even better on DVD. The plot is good and the photography is excellent. The cast is so-so but for an exciting suspense filled ride it can't be beat.

A great film, if you don't have time to sit through The Great Escape. Great story, and great plot progression.

Excellent movie. Depicting what it was like in the early days of WWII for the heavy bomer groups.
