More than 70 critics (including those at Time magazine, USA Today, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly) and critics' groups in New York, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. In addition, Spielberg received his third Directors Guild of America Award, the American Legion ""The Spirit of Normandy"" Award, a USO Merit Award from the USO of Metropolitan Washington, as well as the highest civilian public service award from the Department of the Army. Selected for more than 160 Top Ten lists, Saving Private Ryan's other honors include Golden Globes for Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director, the Producers Guild of America Award and ten nominations from the British Academy Film Awards. Seen through the eyes of a squad of American soldiers, the story begins with World War II's historic D-Day invasion, then moves beyond the beach as the men embark on a dangerous special mission. Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) must take his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat. Faced with impossible odds, the men question their orders. Why are eight men risking their lives to save just one? Surrounded by the brutal realities of war, each man searches for his own answer – and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage.

About the DVD: A 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen picture with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, but saying that doesn't do justice to how well this disc captures the movie's cinematography, sound and feel. The transfer is first-rate. There are English subtitles and other extras, including "A Special Message from Steven Spielberg," promoting the D-Day museum.

It didnt have that image of totally proud, couragous and superhero Americans going into battle like they showed in war movies during the fiftys and sixtys (Sands of Iwo Jima, Green Berets). Yet, it dosent have that anti-war feeling in the eightys war movies ... Complete Review

This is why we watch movies. This will be regarded as one of the 10 best movies of all time. Graphic, but not gratuitously violent and thoroughly authentic, Private Ryan tells the story of why America is the greatest country in history. We all have flaws, but our core values are always intact. ... Complete Review

This was an awesome war story that focused on many different aspects of war, including the human element, rather than simply utilizing multiple explosions and special effects to create the entire movie. We really enjoyed this film.

It certainly made the horrors of war more prolifically accessible to those of us with no war experience. I felt it was well acted and directed. Well worth watching but be prepared for the Gore!
