The Battle of Vicksburg- May 18-July 4, 1863

Even though the North controlled both ends of the Mississippi River, it was still unable to use the river safely since Confederates retained control of Vicksburg. In early 1863, Grant had made repeated attempts to seize Vicksburg. He finally succeeded on May 18. For over six weeks, Vicksburg was under siege. After six weeks, Vicksburg was surrendered to the Union. This victory as well as victories at other battles in the West, led to Grant's appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies.
