• Developed a query translation system for query processing across heterogeneous information sources.  The system generates  minimal-superset translations and also derives the minimal-cost filter queries to obtain exact query results [2, 5, 6, 8, 10].
• Developed data translation algorithms for mapping hierarchical data (such as XML) across heterogeneous contexts [7].
• Developed an approximate query translation system that finds the closet mappings under virtually any closeness criterion that combines both precision and recall [15].
• Codesigned STARTS, the Stanford Protocol Proposal for Internet Retrieval and Search, which is an informal standard effort involving Netscape, Microsoft Network, Infoseek, Fulcrum, and Verity, among others [12]. STARTS has since evolved into the WebDAV/DASL protocol, which IETF is currently defining.
• Codesigned the Stanford Metadata Architecture, which defines the metadata and the associated framework to enable interoperability of heterogeneous systems [1, 4, 11, 14].

• Developed a novel algorithm for incremental processing of similarity-based queries over multimedia repositories in the presence of expensive predicates.   The algorithm has a processing cost proportional to the number of top matches actually accessed by users, which is provably optimal [16].
• Codesigned WebDB, a hypertext and image management system based on an object-oriented database integrated with full-text search [9, 13].
