Challenge Problem Grading

Each challenge problem is graded on a coarse 3-category scale, according to the following rough rubric.

Gold - Well thought-out solution, looks perfect (but see disclaimer below)
Silver - Good effort made but solution is not perfect; the expected score for many students on many challenge problems
Bronze - Some effort made, but either did not attempt the entire problem, or the solution is cursory or clearly incorrect

Please keep in mind that receiving a Gold on a challenge problem does not necessarily mean that your solution is completely correct. It's impossible for us to do fine-grained grading of such a large number of solutions to complex homework problems, so we may overlook minor errors when there's an obvious understanding of the solution. Also, some of the challenge problems are open-ended with many correct solutions. As a result: The challenge problem sample solutions we provide are considered part of the required material of the course.
