Internet-Scale Collection of Human-Reviewed Data
Enterprise and web data processing and content aggregation systems often require extensive use of human-reviewed data (e.g. for training and monitoring machine learning-based applications). Today these needs are often met by in-house efforts or out-sourced offshore contracting. Emerging applications attempt to provide automated collection of human-reviewed data at Internet-scale. We conduct extensive experiments to study the effectiveness of one such application. We also study the feasibility of using Yahoo! Answers, a general question-answering forum, for human-reviewed data collection.

SERF: Stanford Entity Resolution Framework
Our goal is to study and model the process of entity resolution, or the process of identifying distinct records across data sources that represent the same real world object (i.e. a person or an organization). The fundamental building blocks are similarity and merge functions that we treat as black boxes because they usually incorporate a great deal of application and domain-specific expertise and have been well studied. We are concerned with interesting properties of these functions and their implications in the entity resolution process. We will implement an infrastructure as well as develop families of entity resolution algorithms. We are also interested in metrics to characterize the fidelity of data sources and to evaluate "goodness" (i.e. scalability, correctness) of entity resolution algorithms.

XML Privacy Enforcement
We have designed a flexible and easy to understand privacy policy language for XML content, enabling specification of institutional policies as well as individual preferences. Our implemented system transparently enforces privacy policies in XML repositories by leveraging a query-rewriting interface, without requiring any changes to existing applications or standard query engine. Offline, a set of annotations are generated from a privacy policy. At query time, an application query in XPath is rewritten into an XQuery expression that checks the privacy annotations to filter out private information. We have done performance evaluation of our system quantifying the overhead of privacy enforcement. We have also considered extensions to our system for rewriting XQuery and for other policy semantics.

EKSO: Efficient Keyword Search through Offline Indexing
We have implemented a system that supports highly efficient keyword-based search over relational databases: A relational database is "crawled" in advance, text-indexing virtual documents that correspond to interconnected database content. At query time, the text index supports keyword-based searches with instantaneous response, identifying database objects corresponding to the virtual documents matching the query.
