James Z. Wang

Welcome!

This is my personal webpage, kept at my Stanford alumni account by courtesy of Stanford CS Department. I do not currently have a connection with Stanford other than being an alumnus.

My research interests include automatic image tagging / recognition, climate informatics, biomedical informatics, computability of aesthetics and emotions, semantics-sensitive image retrieval, story picturing, art image analysis and retrieval, and image security. I am currently leading a group of doctoral students and undergraduate research students at Penn State to explore these areas. For more information, click on research or visit my Scholar profile.

My Education

I received a summa cum laude Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from University of Minnesota (1994) where my thesis advisor was number theorist Dennis A. Hejhal. From Stanford University, I received an M.S. in Mathematics (1997), an M.S. in Computer Science (1997), and a Ph.D. in Medical Information Sciences (2000) where my doctoral thesis advisor was computer science pioneer Gio Wiederhold. Héctor García-Molina and Stephen T.C. Wong served on my dissertation committee.

My Affiliations

I have been on Penn State faculty since 2000, where I am Distinguished Professor of the College of Information Sciences and Technology. I am also Affiliated Professor of the Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Biosciences (MCIBS) Program (Option on Bioinformatics and Genomics, the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences), the Computational Science Graduate Minor, and the Social Data Analytics Graduate Program. I serve as the founding Co-Director of the Intelligent Information Systems Laboratory (2001-).

My Activities

I was a Visiting Professor of Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University (2007-2008) and a Program Manager in the Office of the National Science Foundation Director (OISE; 2011 and 2012). I have held visiting positions at IBM Almaden Research Center (with QBIC group), SRI International (with Martin A. Fischler), NEC Research (San Jose), and Chinese Academy of Sciences. In my spare time, I like to travel around the world and experience different cultures and arts.

My Teaching

I teach Data Sciences undergraduate-level and Informatics graduate-level courses. Welcome to visit my class! Most people say I am a nice guy. I also have candies in my office for those students who come to see me.
