STANFORD
ONLINE
APPLICATION

Features

The new Stanford online application offers a multitude of exciting new services to both applying students and reviewing staff, unlocking the potential buried in the inflexibility of the current system.

For Students

One-time Registration with Stanford University

In registering directly with Stanford University, students have only one username and password to track every Stanford activity while applying. If accepted, all of their data and preferences can be automatically transferred to the student data system (Axess). Furthermore, the student knows that his/her data is in safe and secure hands and that it is being used only for application purposes.

Additional Information and Help

Because the user accounts are managed by Stanford itself, the site can provide Stanford-specific information, chat rooms, and help to prospective students while they fill out the application. In addition, the site allows the student to keep track of the progress made in completing the application. The applicant also has the option of communicating directly with the "right" person if material should be missing.

Adaptive Forms

Flexible forms provide an easy and unrestricted way of answering essay questions and short answer segments. No word count restricts space, unless the Stanford admissions office requests one.

Preview

With this feature, the student can take a look at exactly what the admissions officer is going to see. Preview mode shows the whole application as a coherent document that can be viewed or printed. There is no more uncertainty about what the student's application will look like.

Tracking System

The tracking system provides an easy way for applicants to keep tabs on deadlines and on which parts of their applications have been submitted. It also provides feedback on application status and the reception of secondary materials (SAT scores, etc.)

For Reviewers

Personalization

Every reviewer has his/her own username and password, and the system allows reviewers to set specific, unique preferences. For example, a reviewer can choose which parts of an application to view and how to group the information presented.

Reviewer Communication System

Within the application backend, reviewers can post comments and notes on any part of an application. These addenda are visible only to other reviewers. This feature allows for a paper-free review process, eliminating many space and time constraints from the traditional methodology.

Reviewer User Management

The reviewer user management system provides a comfortable, easy, and safe way to administer the current pool of reviewers. Superusers can add and remove users as well as change their privileges.

Tracking System

The data structures in the main database are designed so that every comment, change, and edit performed on an application by a reviewing officer is recorded. This permanent and complete history makes the admissions process transparent for the admissions staff and also allows questions about application reviews to be answered instantly.
