Gio Wiederhold
Mentor tree extracted from student tree Dec. 2008.
A revised tree has been prepared which
shows the ancestry in reverse chronological order, making it easier to follow, and adds source citations and notes.
It uses the STYLE directive of HTML for formatting, which works well on the Safari browser, but not on Firefox and even
less well on IE. The contents shown was originally the same, but this chronologcal tree is no onger maintained.
For student information see the
List of Gio's students.
or the tree of Gio's students and grand
students.
Gio obtained his PhD at UC San Francisco in 1976.
Gio's advisor was John Starkweather,
the designer of the Pilot language to create learning scripts. Information about further
academic ancestors has been collected by
Panagiotis Ipeirotis (Local copy).
It includes Galilleo, Hermannn von Helmholtz (Treatise on the conservation of energy and inventor of the ophtalmoscope,
1821-1894). One of the students of Helmholtz was Albert A. Michelson, the first American Nobel laureate, 1907.
On another branch the tree includes Hermann Boerhaave (twice), a most influential physician of the 15th century.
I expanded on some Stanford University connections, as David Starr Jordan,
and Lewis M. Terman.
Linkages were provided via
Wiederhold
in the Mathematics Genealogy [m], which provides also the thesis titles and biographical pointers and the
Neurotree[n], which shows also other
advisors and mentors.
The Chemical Genealogy [c] contains many useful
biographical entries. Later information was provided by Jan den Hollander <holland at uab.edu> [h].
Where possible, entries were verified from wikepedia
and other Internet sources, as the Catholic Encyclopedia [e].
Another source provided is Molhuysen: Nieuw Nederlandsch biografisch woordenboek [d].
Doubtful information is labeled grey.
I keep some ancilary references in my files [r].
The direct ancestors of Gio's, and hence of
his students, are listed below.
I use an ! to indicatre there is currently no known ancestor.
Because Schlosberg, Agassiz (4), Mueller, Walther, Senguerdius, de Volder, Kepler, Sylvius, van Helmont, and Christian Weigel
had two or more advisors the tree splits ten major times.
Hermann von Helmholtz (-6.1.1.2, -8.1.2.2), Fallopia (-1.1.16.1.1.4, -2.1.13.2.1.2.2.1.1),
Frans van Schooten (-11.1.1.1.2, --15.2.1.2.2.1.1.2), Franciscus Sylvius (-13.1.2.3.2.1.2.2, --19.1.2.2.1.1.2.2),
Thomas a Kempis (-2.1.10.1.1.2.1.2.1.1.2, -2.1.17.2.1.2.2.5.2) and
Gemma Frisius (-2.1.10.1.1.4.1.1.2, -2.1.13.2.1.2.2.5.1) supervised two ancestors and hence appear twice.
Boerhaave (-11.2.1.2.1.1.1, -11.2.1.2.1.2.1, -1.1.14.2.1.2.2.1, -1.15.2.1.1) appears four times.
When there are multiple sequential mentors listed the main degree advisor should get the .1 extension and be listed last.
That is not currently consisistently marked, and for early mentors hard to establish.
All boldened mentors and many others have biographies in Wikipedia.
Note that MA master of arts or PhM master of Philosophydegrees were the highest degrees in earlier times, and that instead of
getting a PhD students would be appointed to professorships, perhaps after a second thesis, a "Habilitation" in Germany.
Other degrees shown are ThD doctor of theology, JD doctor of law, and ord being ordained as a priest.
Yet earlier, students would just be referred to as disciples, and not depend on degrees when they moved on.
Universities that appear frequently are abbreviated, as shown in their first instance.
Some notes to help in navigating the tree appear intendted and in italics. Some notes pertaining to exteranal linkages
appear doubly indented.
